About Maddie's Riders
Maddie's Riders is a team of people who have joined together to help raise awareness and money to support the American Diabetes Association. The team was founded in the summer of 2002 by the Ehl family when they decided they wanted to make a difference and support the mission of the American Diabetes Association whose goal is to help find a cure for diabetes as well as take care of the people with diabetes until that cure comes along. The team is named after their daughter Madeline (See History Below). The event is the Summit to Surf bike ride, which is one of the Northwest's premiere bicycling events. This event provides riders with a variety of courses to meet all skill levels and regardless of the route chosen riders will experience some of the most spectacular scenery in Oregon.

The Reason that we Ride
Maddie's riders was created as a result of one very special person, "Maddie" who developed Type 1 diabetes at the age of three. Maddie who is now 10 years old and has had to deal with many things since being diagnosed, the least of which is having four to five shots a day and blood sugar checks at least that many times a day. Maddie hopes that someday as a result of her efforts and the efforts of the friends and family who support her that there will be better ways for her to take care of herself other than shots and finger pokes that are such a part of her daily life.

Past to Present: Our Goals for This Year!

The team Maddie's Riders has changed since it first started in 2002, that year the team had only seven riders and raised about $1000. Last year in 2007 though the team grew tremendously reaching nearly 40 riders and raising over $12,000. This placed Maddie's riders as the largest team in any division that participated in the Summit to Surf. This event raised over $314,500 last year for which the money was used for research and support that will hopefully someday make diabetes a thing of the past.
